Thus, some expectant mothers believe that with the help of Otrivin for children they can fight a runny nose during the gestational period. At the same time, they refer to the fact that the medicine is indicated for use in young children. But is it worth treating with this nasal spray while pregnant?
Otrivin for children in various trimesters of pregnancy
The annotation for the nasal spray states that it can be used during pregnancy in exceptional cases, that is, if the potential benefit to the mother outweighs the likely risk to the fetus. Otrivin during pregnancy: indications and contraindications
The drug is available in 10 ml bottles with different concentrations of the active substance (0.05% and 1%). The spray contains auxiliary components: water, benzalkonium chloride, disodium edetate, sodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate, and its active substance is xylometazoline.
Otrivin for children promotes vasoconstriction, which facilitates nasal breathing. In addition, it has an anti-congestive effect, that is, it helps relieve swelling of the nasal cavity. Thanks to the double action, a runny nose goes away very quickly, and breathing becomes much easier.
Indications for the use of nasal spray are:
- preparation for rhinoscopy;
- complex therapy for otitis media;
- insufficient secretion in case of diseases of the paranasal sinuses;
- hay fever;
- sinusitis;
- acute respiratory infections;
- allergic rhinitis;
- hay fever;
- Eustachitis.
Otrivin for children should not be used if you are hypersensitive to its components. In addition, you should refrain from using the drug if you have the following diseases and pathologies:

Otrivin is a vasoconstrictor drug, and its effect on blood vessels is associated with an alpha-adrenomimetic effect. Once on the nasal mucosa, the solution acts on alpha-type adrenergic receptors, which leads to vasoconstriction.
The effect of using the spray begins to develop after 2 minutes and lasts up to 12 hours. The medication quickly eliminates swelling and reduces the severity of redness.
Thanks to the use of Otrivin, hypersecretion of mucus is suppressed and drainage of the nasal passages is improved. All these effects lead to the elimination of the feeling of nasal congestion and improved nasal breathing.
Thanks to hypromellose and sorbitol in the spray, the medicine additionally moisturizes the mucous membrane, and also prevents dryness and irritation (symptoms that often appear during treatment with xylometazoline).
Treatment with Otrivin for children can lead to the appearance of:
- sneezing;
- tingling or burning sensation in the nose;
- dry mucous membrane;
- headache;
- nausea;
- insomnia;
- allergic reaction;
- high blood pressure;
- feelings of heartbeat.
Very rare side effects of the drug include visual disturbances, Quincke's edema, tachycardia, heart rhythm disturbances, vomiting and other problems. If they appear, stop using Otrivin immediately and consult a doctor.
The drug cannot be combined with some antidepressants, sympathomimetics and medications from the group of MAO inhibitors.

Otrivin is well tolerated, which allows it to be used in patients with hypersensitivity of the nasal mucosa, and mucus separation occurs unhindered. The drug has a balanced pH, almost identical to that of the nasal cavity.
It contains inactive components - hypromellose 4000 (methylhydroxypropylcellulose) and sorbitol, which have a moisturizing effect. This reduces the severity of symptoms of irritation and dryness of the nasal mucosa that develop with long-term use of xylometazoline.
When used in therapeutic concentrations, Otrivin does not lead to the development of hyperemia and does not irritate the mucous membrane. After administration, xylometazoline begins to act within a few minutes, and the duration of the effect is about 12 hours.
Pharmacokinetics
When applied topically, the absorption of xylometazoline is extremely low, and the content in the blood plasma is so insignificant that its determination using modern analytical chemistry methods is not possible.
Local reactions: with prolonged and/or frequent use - tingling, burning, dryness and/or irritation of the nasopharyngeal mucosa, hypersecretion, sneezing; rarely – swelling of the nasal mucosa.
Systemic reactions: with prolonged and/or frequent use – nausea; rarely - dizziness, vomiting, headache, palpitations, increased blood pressure, tachycardia, arrhythmia, blurred vision, insomnia, development of allergic reactions; with long-term therapy in high doses – depression.
Otrivin is incompatible with tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors.
Side effects and contraindications to the use of the drug
If the patient suffers from diseases of the cardiovascular system, diabetes, excessive sensitivity to adrenergic medications, dizziness, difficulty falling asleep, tremor, arrhythmia, then Otrivin for children is prescribed with caution.
The drug should not be used frequently and for a long time, as this is fraught with side effects, for example, allergic reactions (burning, tingling in the sinuses), hypersecretion, dryness of the nasopharyngeal mucosa and its swelling. The following may appear: nausea, arrhythmia, hypertension, difficulty falling asleep, vomiting, lack of clarity of vision, migraine, depression, increased heart rate.
It is not advisable to exceed the dosage prescribed in the instructions. Otherwise, side effects from the use of the drug may increase (heart rate, blood pressure increase), and confusion may occur. In case of overdose, symptomatic treatment should be carried out.
The maximum duration of therapy is 1.5 weeks. It is prohibited to combine nasal spray with MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants.
Composition of the spray and its purpose
Spray "Otrivin" is primarily a vasoconstrictor that gently eliminates mucous secretions during inflammation of rhinitis. The action of the drug is aimed at constricting blood vessels, enlarging the bronchi and normalizing breathing.
Thus, the medicine has a beneficial effect in case of inflammation of the nasal sinuses, severe nasal congestion and in the event of swelling in the mucous part of the nasal passage.
The drug is prescribed for acute or chronic rhinitis, allergic forms of inflammation, the penetration of viruses and infections that provoke the appearance of inflammation and thick mucous discharge.
The drug contains active ingredients that act within five minutes after administration into the nose. An effective combination of active ingredients allows you to restore breathing and normalize the functioning of the nasopharynx.
It is necessary to take Otrivin in case of pregnancy only after personal consultation with a therapist, since the drug differs from other vasoconstrictor drugs in a host of side effects.
Despite the good and rapid action of the medicine, during pregnancy you need to be more careful when choosing medications. Avoid any unpleasant consequences of medications; therefore, when treating ENT inflammations, permission from a therapist or gynecologist is required.
Do not take the spray without consulting a doctor, as in case of hypersensitivity to the active ingredients, serious consequences may occur: nausea, vomiting, dizziness and changes in blood pressure. In the latter case, this is dangerous due to the threat of miscarriage.
Otrivin for children: rules of use

A runny nose in children over 6 years of age and adults can be treated with a 0.1% spray. The maximum dosage of the drug is: 1-3 drops in each nasal passage, but no more than 4 times a day. For the treatment of infants, it is recommended to use a spray of 0.05% (one injection into each nasal passage 1-2 times every 24 hours).
