Chilean athlete gave birth in the gym
In 2009, everyone heard about a completely unusual birth in Chile, which had to take place right in the gym. 22-year-old heavyweight athlete Elisabeth Poblete, who competes as part of the Olympic team, felt unwell and had abdominal pain while lifting the barbell during training.
The girl assures that she really had no idea about the reasons until the very last minute. So, after training, her first baby was born. Three months premature, weighing only 1.2 kg, but healthy and strong. And later, Elizabeth nevertheless took part in the Olympics and took 12th place.
Causes
The premature birth of a baby is associated with many factors, but among them the main place is occupied by provocative factors:
- genetic predisposition;
- neglect of medical recommendations;
- low position of the fetus;
- a woman lifted heavy bags or other objects;
- multiple pregnancy.
Sometimes childbirth takes you by surprise at home, but even in this case the risk of an extreme birth of a baby cannot be ruled out. For example, a transport collapse that prevents the movement of a car with a woman in labor.
Force majeure circumstances lead to the fact that assistance to a woman in labor has to be provided using improvised methods.
Doctors strongly recommend taking into account all possible risks and not leaving the area with the maternity hospital or hospital.
Self-delivery can result in serious consequences for the mother and her baby:
- bleeding;
- ruptures;
- penetration of infection;
- mechanical injury to the baby due to ignorance of the provision of primary care;
- infection of the fetus;
- hypothermia and subsequent inflammatory process;
- lack of childbirth;
- infection of the mother's blood.
The person providing obstetric care must take into account the existing consequences and take all measures to prevent them.
If at the time of emergency childbirth a spouse happens to be next to the expectant mother, his knowledge acquired in preparatory courses on motherhood will be useful at the moment.
Came to the finish line and gave birth
The daughter of athlete Amber Miller was destined to be born not in a hospital room, but just beyond the finish line for marathon runners. Despite the fact that the woman was 39 weeks pregnant, she did not intend to refuse to participate in long-distance running competitions.
Amber finally completed the Chicago Marathon. Shortly before the finish line, the athlete began having contractions, but she continued, if not to run, then at least to move forward. Having reached the finish line, she asked for something to eat, and a couple of minutes later labor began. The baby was named June. Perhaps she will continue the sports tradition of her parents. By the way, Amber’s husband also took part in the same marathon.
Preparation process
It is necessary to remain calm in order to assess the situation.
If the amniotic fluid does not leak, the possibility of timely seeking qualified help remains possible.
In the event that active labor has begun, it is necessary to ask for help from relatives, spouse, and neighbors.
Mom's preparation:
- Calm down, take a comfortable position (preferably on your side).
- Maintain even breathing, remember breathing exercises.
- To relieve pain, perform self-massage of the lower back and abdomen.
- You can’t panic, scream or hold tight.
Assistant preparation:
- “Turn on” your common sense.
- Stay calm and don't panic.
- Reassure the woman in labor and immediately call an ambulance, no matter where the unexpected birth occurs.
If there is no help available, the woman will have to give birth on her own.
For first-time mothers, this is extremely stressful, so you should immediately call an ambulance, where the doctor will instruct the mother in labor.
The first minutes of life are between floors
Ninfa Ramirez from New York and her husband Armando Ortiz, after a routine examination by a doctor at a medical center in the Bronx, were told that the time for giving birth had not yet come and were advised to go home with peace of mind. Imagine the surprise of a pregnant woman when her contractions began right in the elevator of a residential building.
A similar story happened to a British resident, 26-year-old Ashley Words, who was prevented from getting to the maternity ward by a suddenly broken elevator. In the elevator car, along with the woman in labor, were her sister Lauren and the watchman.
Nurse Ashley was instructed by doctors through the elevator door on how to deliver the baby. As soon as baby Thomas was born, the elevator started working again.
Ten thousand meters above the ground
In January 2013, Armina Babayan experienced childbirth on board an airplane. After a quarrel with her husband in Novosibirsk, she decided to urgently return to her parents in Armenia. She boarded the plane nine months pregnant. I felt good and expected that I would survive the five-hour flight normally.

The first contractions began within two hours. The woman assured that everything was fine and it was too early for her to give birth. But the flight attendants were ready for such a situation. We prepared everything necessary in advance and delivered the baby 40 minutes before landing. Despite the first experience, the flight attendants worked professionally. Ambulance doctors met the mother and baby at the ramp.
Resuscitation of a newborn after childbirth.
If the baby does not cry or show signs of breathing within two minutes after birth, then place him on his back on a hard surface and very carefully begin mouth-to-mouth artificial respiration. Throw back his head so that the tongue does not cover the larynx, clasp the child’s mouth and nose with your lips at the same time, and gently blow in air at a frequency of 35-40 breaths per minute, but not the full volume contained in your lungs, but only that which approximately fits in the cavity mouth
Check the pulse of the newborn baby; if it is absent, then you need to start performing a closed heart massage. For two breaths, fifteen presses on the middle third of the sternum with the index finger. If there is an assistant, then you do artificial respiration, and he does an indirect cardiac massage, five compressions on the sternum for one breath.
In Miami, a woman with five donor organs successfully gave birth
In 2013, 19-year-old Fatima Al Nasari from Qatar underwent liver transplantation, pancreas transplantation, and surgery on the colon and small intestine. She had previously been diagnosed with problems with the vascular system.
In total, the girl had five donor organs. And this is the first such case in the history of medicine when a patient in such a condition was able to give birth to a healthy child. And in a few years, she and her husband are planning another baby.
The army is not a hindrance to childbirth - extreme in a military unit in Afghanistan
A British Army woman had no idea she was pregnant until she gave birth. Either the girl really was not yet pregnant during the medical examination that preceded her deployment to Afghanistan, or she deliberately hid it after she was already at her duty station.
When the time came to give birth, the serviceman went to the doctors complaining of abdominal pain and a few hours later gave birth to a healthy boy.
Childbirth on a train with a guardian angel on your shoulder
Elena Trofimova from the village of Olekma, Tyndinsky district, Amur region, was expecting her second child. I went with my husband Roman to the regional center for a routine examination. Getting there is only possible by rail. They had to spend 9 hours on the road. The train started moving, and Elena went into labor.
The woman in labor was given a separate compartment. It turned out that my husband’s friend, doctor Evgeniy, was traveling on the same train. And one of the passengers turned out to be a midwife. Half an hour later the baby was born, all the passengers on the carriage were happy, who had been worried about the woman in labor all this time. The son was named after the savior doctor Zhenechka. Despite the extreme, all the circumstances worked out in Elena’s favor - nothing less than an angel sitting on her shoulder.
Instructions: what to do during emergency childbirth
Obstetrics can be carried out in two ways: independently or with an assistant.
On one's own:
- Wash the hands;
- prepare the place by laying down a significant number of sheets;
- remove tight clothes;
- prepare sterile bandages and scissors;
- half-squat, leaning against the wall;
- as you exhale, begin to push;
- do not pull the baby, but only support him;
- After he is born, rub his back or feet to make the baby cry.
To deliver the placenta, you need to massage the nipples or try to attach the baby to the breast.
Cover the perineum with bandages and wait for the ambulance to arrive. With an assistant:
- clean your hands with alcohol;
- spread a towel;
- invite the woman in labor to sit comfortably, and ask her to spread her hips to the side;
- prepare sterile bandages and boil the scissors;
- while pushing, hold the fetal head, but under no circumstances pull or press on the abdomen;
- after birth, cut the umbilical cord;
- attach the child to the mother's breast;
- wait for the birth of the placenta;
- cover the perineum with bandages;
- apply cold to the uterus.
How to cut the umbilical cord:
- bandage it, stepping back a couple of centimeters from the child’s belly;
- First they bandage it, and only then cut it off a little above the bandaged area;
- use only sterile instruments;
- in the absence of sterile equipment, do not perform the dressing, but leave the fetus connected to the placenta until the doctors arrive.
The child's seat should be handed over to qualified specialists, having first wrapped it in cellophane.
Spruce, frost, taiga and... time to give birth
And finally, the most extreme story. In the Perm region, in the village of Markino, 24-year-old local resident Olga Pochernina never expected that the birth of her children would be special. There were still two months left before the expected due date. And after another examination, the gynecologist suggested that she go to the hospital in advance. The pregnant woman refused, which she later regretted very much.
Contractions found her in bed early in the morning. And the nearest hospital is 27 km away. It’s winter, the roads are not really cleared, it’s difficult even for an all-terrain vehicle to get through these parts. My husband Nikita decided that we would get to the hospital on foot. We got on our skis and went. Outside the window - 35C. The nearest paramedic station was 3 km away. But Olga couldn’t stand it anymore.
The birth began right in the middle of the forest. They were received by their husband Nikita himself. He threw his jacket onto the snow and laid his wife down. My grandmother supervised the process over the phone and told me what needed to be done. Nikita is a lumberjack by profession, but he acted, as doctors later assessed, as a real obstetrician-gynecologist. He cut off the umbilical cord, wrapped his newborn daughter Snezhana in his jacket and ran to his relatives’ house to warm the baby as quickly as possible, and then run to his wife’s aid.
But the story didn't end there. While Olga was waiting for her husband, the contractions continued. It turned out that a second baby was destined to be born. On her own, overcoming the pain, she managed to get to a relative’s house, where emergency doctors took her from there. The second baby, Sasha, was born in the maternity ward. It was a miracle that all three survived, the doctors commented afterwards.
