Ovulation - from the Latin term "ovum", meaning egg - is a process that ensures the release and exit into the abdominal cavity of an egg ready for fertilization. This is one of the phases of a woman's menstrual cycle.
Of course, the birth of a new life depends entirely on regular, undisturbed monthly ovulation and the readiness of the female body to have children. However, the key to successful conception is not only ovulation. Among other things, this is a well-functioning mechanism for the interaction of a female egg with a male sperm.

- Within approximately 12-16 days from the start of the menstrual cycle, the oocyte matures inside the follicle and is released into the pelvic cavity during ovulation.
- At the same moment, the villi of the fallopian tube are activated. With wave-like movements, they push the released egg, capture it and direct it into the tubular funnel, from where the mature oocyte begins its movement along the oviductal canal.
- At the end of sexual intercourse, sperm actively travel the distance from the vagina through the cervix and uterine cavity to the fallopian tubes. During this path, some of them die, and only the most active will reach the goal. But among them only one will become a “champion”.
- Meeting the egg in the fallopian tube, sperm try with their enzymes to dissolve its two protective shells - the corona radiata and the pellucidum.
- If there are few active male cells, there will not be enough enzymes to dissolve the oocyte membranes.
- Through the loose corona radiata, the most “nimble” sperm penetrates inside. This is where the process of fusion occurs, which we call fertilization or, in fact, conception.
Having merged together, the female and male halves form one diploid cell - a zygote containing a double set of chromosomes. This is the very first stage of the embryonic life.
But to become an embryo, the zygote must go through certain developmental stages. First, thanks to the movements of the ciliated epithelium of the tube and contractions of its walls, the zygote begins to move along the fallopian canal to the uterine cavity.
Once in the uterus, it attaches to the mucous membrane of one of the walls and is now rightfully called an embryo - this is the process of implantation.
