Diet for breastfeeding

There is an opinion that many foods should be avoided when breastfeeding. Sometimes, after friends tell you that after giving birth you will have to eat only buckwheat, and that pork is contraindicated during breastfeeding, the expectant mother panics and refuses to breastfeed her baby. But such an opinion does not have sufficient basis. A nursing mother must adhere to the following rules:

  1. Limit your diet for 1 month after giving birth. The child is very small, and it is not clear whether he suffers from allergic diseases or not. Therefore, during the neonatal period, preference should be given to hypoallergenic products.
  2. You can't stick to diets to lose weight. Such a diet will negatively affect the health of mother and baby. A deficiency of nutrients will affect the condition of hair, nails and skin.
  3. The volume of food should increase slightly. Just add a light evening snack.
  4. The basis is a varied diet without frills, food should be balanced.
  5. When introducing a new product, it is necessary to monitor the baby's reaction. If redness appears or the baby is naughty, you should discontinue the product for a while.
  6. Food must be high quality and natural.

Can a nursing mother eat chicken?

Congratulations, you have become a mother and if you decide that the baby will be breastfed, then you need to carefully monitor your diet.

Well, for example, you want to eat chicken, but can you eat it?

Will this product negatively affect the health of the little man?

Let's try to answer this question: can a nursing mother eat chicken?

You have decided to cook and enjoy chicken, but let's look at which bird will not harm your baby and in what form it should be consumed.

Broiler chicken raised on a poultry farm, which was stuffed with feed with all kinds of additives, is absolutely not suitable for your diet.

From such a bird, the child may have an allergic reaction, a tummy ache, and such consequences are undesirable for you and the baby.

Also, you should not eat fried or smoked chicken; such carcasses contain a lot of fat and harmful substances that are deposited in the skin of the bird - this can affect the quality of breast milk.

It is safest for you to eat a domestic chicken carcass or buy it from trusted suppliers.

Also for you, a nursing mother, the broth from this bird will be useful, but before you cook it, remove all the skin from the carcass, because during cooking all the harmful substances accumulated on the skin and subcutaneous fat will get into the broth and this will cause your baby may have skin rashes.

And if you cook kritsa, the cooking time after boiling should be at least one hour - this will help kill all harmful microbes.

I advise you not to eat chicken often, and if you still can’t give it up, then use lean chicken breast meat in small quantities.

And, in general, any meat is a source of protein, and it is necessary for a growing body, so you cannot do without a meat diet.

We hope that this article answered your question: can a nursing mother eat chicken?

Benefits and harms of the liver during breastfeeding

Animal liver is a valuable product with many beneficial properties. This product has a lot of advantages:

  • The liver is easily digestible, enriching the body with proteins that are necessary for growth and renewal of the body. The advantage is that protein from it is absorbed many times easier than from animal or poultry meat.
  • The product contains a significant amount of iron, which prevents anemia - an ailment that many women face after giving birth.
  • Calcium is necessary for strengthening bone tissue and elasticity of muscle fibers.
  • Sodium is necessary in many metabolic processes and to maintain normal water-salt balance in the body.
  • Vitamin C supports the immune system and increases the body's resistance to various infections.
  • B vitamins are necessary for the proper development and growth of the baby.
  • Folic acid helps strengthen the nervous system.
  • Vitamin A is essential for eye health and also significantly transforms hair and skin.
  • Just one serving of this product will provide the body with the necessary amino acids, which are necessary for proper protein synthesis and stable brain function.

Liver is a hypoallergenic product, so it can be eaten without fear while breastfeeding. This product is also recommended for the diet of young children, starting from 9-10 months of age.

Low calorie content (from 120 to 140 Kcal in different types) and a small amount of fat make the liver a dietary product that will not harm women trying to lose weight after childbirth.

Another advantage of liver is that it is easy and quick to prepare, which will save time for a young mother who, in addition to household chores, must pay a lot of attention to the baby.

Can a nursing mother have liver? Of course you can! Moreover, experts allow the use of this product already in the first month of breastfeeding.

The possible harm to the liver is that it, like any other product, can cause a negative reaction in the child in case of individual intolerance. The chance that your baby will develop an allergy to the liver is extremely small, but you shouldn’t rule it out at all.

There is an opinion that during the life of an animal, its liver accumulates toxins and is unsafe to eat. It is a myth! The liver is the organ that helps remove toxins. It cannot accumulate them, since its structure and functions are not intended for this. Therefore, you can eat liver and give it to children without fear.

Since liver contains a large amount of protein, people with kidney problems should use it with caution. This does not mean that it should be completely excluded from the diet. Portions should be reasonable, and presence on the table should not be too frequent.

Prohibited Products

Some foods should not be consumed during the entire breastfeeding period. First of all, foods that cause an allergic reaction or digestive problems are excluded:

  • fruits that do not grow nearby (citrus fruits and exotic fruits from other countries);
  • carbonated and alcoholic drinks, including beer;
  • fatty meat broths;
  • mushrooms;
  • pickled or salted preparations;
  • canned food, products containing preservatives;
  • fatty, fried meat, lard, smoked meats;
  • sausage, frankfurters;
  • chocolate, bakery products with a long shelf life;
  • fast food;
  • mayonnaise;
  • hot seasonings, additives;
  • margarine.

Partially permitted products

A nursing mother should know the list of foods that are partially permitted during breastfeeding:

  • 2-3 months after birth, you can include raw green or yellow vegetables, herbs;
  • high-quality brewed coffee is allowed 6 months after the introduction of complementary foods;
  • seafood with caution after 6 months;
  • egg whites are introduced after 4 months, monitoring the child’s reaction;
  • Do not abuse sugar and salt;
  • bakery products in small quantities;
  • semolina porridge and pasta 1-2 times a week;
  • add whole milk to porridge or tea, do not consume it in its pure form;
  • introduce cabbage soup and borscht in vegetable broth after 3 months;
  • freshly squeezed apple juice after 1 month.

By following the lists of permitted and prohibited foods, a nursing mother will maintain the baby’s health and be able to eat well.

Is it possible for mom to have liver and what kind?

On store shelves you can find a decent variety of the famous offal. This is pork, beef, chicken, and also obtained from cod. Is it possible to have liver while breastfeeding from the first month of a baby’s life, and which one is better to choose? But first, it’s worth understanding why the product is so valued by nutritionists.

What provides the unique properties of any liver as a food product:

  • : A and beta-carotene (plus its precursor), B, C, E, D, N, K. Their effects are presented in the table below.
  • Microelements: iron, copper, zinc, potassium, selenium, phosphorus, manganese. The most important of all is iron, which in the liver is part of a special protein - ferroprotein, due to which it is easily absorbed in the body. No drug from the pharmacy contains such a high content of it. Therefore, liver is recommended for consumption in large quantities for anemia, which often occurs in women after childbirth. It is also useful to eat this product for children from 10 months with reduced hemoglobin.
  • The liver is a source of protein and a number of amino acids, which are vital for the construction of new cells, tissues and organs.
  • Cholesterol, which everyone is afraid of and excludes from the diet in every possible way. Excessive consumption can lead to problems with blood vessels, but in small quantities cholesterol is absolutely safe, and, in addition, is extremely important, especially for a young and growing body, because cell walls are built from it.

Different types of liver differ in the content of certain substances.

Pork

The liver of these animals is most popular among ordinary people. This is due to its soft consistency, ease of preparation, and certain taste qualities of the product. Indeed, a set of vitamins, microelements and other useful ingredients will definitely add health to everyone. But what about mom? Is it possible to eat pork liver in large quantities while breastfeeding?

Still, you should generally abstain from this variety for at least 3 to 4 months. This type contains the highest amount of cholesterol. And such fatty foods can cause digestive upset in the baby: colic and increased gas production.

Also, for women who have problems with the liver, pancreas and bile ducts, it is better to replace pork offal with another option.

Beef

A good option instead of the previous type. Less fatty, contains a large amount of ferroproteins. However, due to its rigidity and the large number of partitions between the slices, the product is used less frequently. But beef liver can rightfully become an alternative even to meat.

From poultry

This by-product has a number of advantages:

  • this is the lowest calorie option - only 125 kcal per 100 g versus 220 and 280 for beef and pork, respectively;
  • in terms of the range of useful substances it is by no means inferior to other types;
  • It is the easiest to prepare, it is soft and has a slightly sweet taste.

Chicken liver during breastfeeding is a favorite in terms of taste and beneficial qualities. The choline it contains will improve brain activity, and tryptophan will elevate mood and normalize sleep for mother and baby.

From fish

The liver, of course, is useful, especially for a growing organism. But the calorie content of the product is 630 - 650 kcal per 100 g, which does not allow it to be consumed in large quantities, especially by women after childbirth. After all, most, on the contrary, are trying to get rid of the hated couple of kilograms, rather than gain new ones. Also, such a fatty product will be difficult for the baby to tolerate, especially the first three months of life, when the functioning of the digestive system is just getting better.

How to eat pork correctly

Pork is not contraindicated during breastfeeding, but the product has beneficial and harmful properties. A nursing mother needs to pay attention to the rules for preparing and eating meat in order to get the benefits of the product and reduce the harmful effects.

It is necessary to introduce meat into the diet of a nursing woman 3 months after childbirth. During this time, the child adapts to the mother's diet. The period of colic will end, and when a new product is introduced, the reaction or lack thereof will be more noticeable.

It is better to bake, stew, or boil meat. Fried meat should be completely avoided. You can add pork liver, it contains little fat.

You need to choose lean pork. Fat content should be less than 10%. It is desirable that the meat is chilled and pink in color. When pressed with a finger, the pulp should be restored.

Before adding meat, you need to cook the broth and taste it. If the child does not react, you can try the meat. At first, you should eat no more than 50 g. Gradually increase the amount to the norm of 150 g.

If a child has a reaction to a new product, it must be discontinued. Next time you can try to enter it no earlier than in a month. In the absence of allergies, pork should be on the menu 2 times a week.

You can cook a lot of things from pork while breastfeeding, the main thing is that the dish is healthy and low-calorie.

Chicken in salads

Poultry meat is rich in protein, which the baby’s body requires for growth and development of the muscular system. It also contains a lot of B vitamins, which have a positive effect on the activity of the nervous system. Doctors recommend eating chicken meat for those who suffer from:

  • joint diseases;
  • problems with the cardiovascular system;
  • eye diseases;
  • obesity;
  • reduced immunity;
  • insomnia.

Therapeutic nutrition includes special chicken dishes that can be eaten in such cases. As a rule, the menu includes boiled meat, steamed chicken cutlets, broth and light soups. Which of the following is suitable for a nursing mother, what masterpieces can she prepare from tasty and healthy white meat, so as not to harm herself and her little treasure? We will try to highlight the answers to these questions in our review.

The most dangerous thing is that all these substances, both fats and carcinogens, reach the baby through mother’s milk, causing problems in his digestive system. The child may suffer from colic, disorders, and diarrhea. You will have to give up the fried, rosy legs that you loved so much before the baby was born.

Boiled chicken, or rather its breast, is considered the most beneficial for breastfeeding.

How to properly cook chicken? Let's look at other ways to use the product:

  1. Pediatricians, nutritionists and experienced housewives will tell you that during the infancy period, when the baby is fed milk, it is best to bake meat in the oven. Why is baked chicken healthier and safer than fried or smoked chicken? With this method of cooking, poultry retains all the beneficial substances, it contains few calories, and has an excellent taste. The main thing is not to use various spicy and allergenic seasonings and sauces when baking in the oven.
  2. Of course, the most ideal option is to simply boil the poultry meat. Naturally, keeping in mind that legs, wings and legs are contraindicated for breastfeeding mothers - they contain few useful elements, but are high in fat and calories.
  3. You can grill a bird by excluding seasonings and carefully removing the skin from the finished carcass, but not in the first months after birth. Parts of the carcass that are dangerous for a nursing mother can be eaten by other family members, but the breast is suitable for you.

Regarding smoked meat during breastfeeding, all pediatricians and nutritionists speak negatively. A smoked product is not very useful for an ordinary person; it is doubly undesirable when the life and development of a newborn baby depends on the quality of milk. The methods by which the poultry is smoked and the quality of the poultry itself are also questionable. It’s better to stay away from such dishes and not put the health of your little treasure at risk.

Boiled meat can be used to make salads. We offer you one of the recipes:

  1. Set of products: 300-400 grams of boiled fillet, 100 grams of cherry tomatoes, 100 grams of hard cheese, lettuce, olive oil for dressing, salt to taste, lemon juice.
  2. All main ingredients must be cut into cubes, seasoned with oil, poured with lemon juice, salt and stir. You can add dried pieces of bread. The result is a light and satisfying salad, with a rich set of vitamins that you need so much during an important period of your life.

Many women ask whether it is possible to eat chicken hearts and gizzards while breastfeeding. Hearts are among the most high-calorie parts of poultry. If you plan to get your figure in order after childbirth, it is better to avoid them. Neither you nor your baby need extra fat. However, they also contain a lot of useful substances.

If you really want something made from hearts, try to cook them correctly. Poorly or incorrectly prepared offal is bitter and does not give pleasure. When cooking, the heart must be washed and visible fatty deposits removed. Boiled and stewed hearts should not be heavily seasoned with various spices; make do with a minimal amount of additives. Obviously, a fried product is not suitable for you, but sometimes you can afford boiled hearts.

Chicken liver, like chicken, is best consumed boiled.

When choosing between offal, pay attention to poultry liver. Tender, quick to prepare, it is rich in healthy elements. Vitamins are widely represented in it, there is calcium and iron, amino acids and minerals, copper and zinc. Riboflavin, contained in the liver, improves the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract and helps the body absorb iron. The liver supplies the thyroid gland with iodine and selenium.

Boiled chicken will be an excellent addition to the menu; it can be used as a separate dish or as part of salads

Please note that women prone to allergies to animal protein should not use this product while breastfeeding. There is a high probability that your baby has inherited this problem, and if the protein gets into the milk, it can lead to disorder and the same allergy. Remember also that you should not eat the skin under any circumstances, because it abundantly accumulates all the harmful substances that can pass into the milk and cause trouble for the baby.

Of course, you shouldn’t give up chicken meat completely, but every woman whose baby is breastfeeding needs to follow reasonable rules and take a careful approach to diet planning. You will be able to endure a few months if you value and love your tiny miracle. Choose easy recipes with chicken, refuse store-bought products, look for a private manufacturer among your neighbors, friends or acquaintances. Use breast or fillet in cooking, and then your menu will be enriched with a tasty and safe product.

Chicken meat contains protein, which promotes the proper development of the child’s muscular system, and B vitamins. Therefore, most pediatricians and nutritionists vote for chicken to be included in the menu of women with breastfeeding.

But this statement has some exceptions. This applies to the choice of carcass parts and methods of preparing them. Therefore, the answer to the question whether a mother can eat chicken while breastfeeding depends on the correct choice of product. It is also necessary to adhere to certain conditions when preparing poultry.

Next, we will look in detail at whether a nursing mother can eat chicken and what dishes to choose in order to extract the greatest benefits from the product for the health of the woman and baby.

Chicken eggs are one of the most popular food products. They are eaten boiled, fried, and as part of other dishes.

Chicken eggs are useful for a nursing mother and baby because they contain the following valuable substances:

  • proteins;
  • vitamins (vitamin D is of particular value during breastfeeding - it prevents the development of rickets in the baby);
  • macro- and microelements;
  • amino acids (have a positive effect on mental activity and the brain).

In addition, cholesterol, which is contained in eggs, promotes cell growth and has a beneficial effect on the formation of the child’s immune and hormonal systems.

But, having many beneficial properties, chicken eggs can also cause harm during breastfeeding. Their danger is as follows:

  • raw eggs can cause salmonellosis;
  • egg white is a strong allergen.

Considering the risk of negative effects of this product on the child’s body, during the first two weeks after childbirth, a woman should refrain from using it. Then you can gradually introduce it into the diet of a nursing mother.

It is recommended to start with half a boiled egg. If the baby does not have an allergic reaction, then it is allowed to increase the portion to 1 egg per day. Omelette and casserole can be eaten once every 2 days.

Experts recommend diversifying a nursing mother's diet with chicken offal. They are very useful for the body weakened by pregnancy and childbirth.

Chicken liver is a dietary product due to its low fat content. In addition, it is perfectly absorbed by the body. The liver contains vitamins and amino acids, and the presence of folic acid and choline has a beneficial effect on the state of the nervous system. Women often experience anemia after childbirth. Chicken liver can help cope with this problem.

The heart of a bird has an equally rich and healthy composition. Magnesium, copper and iron, which this by-product is rich in, increase the level of hemoglobin in the blood. Taurine helps remove toxins from the body, and B vitamins improve metabolism, the nervous system and hormone production.

But at the same time, the heart is the most high-calorie part of the chicken. This should be taken into account. Before cooking, it is necessary to rinse the offal and remove fat deposits.

Chicken stomachs for breastfeeding are useful because they contain not only vitamins and amino acids, but also polyunsaturated and saturated acids. Eating offal promotes cell division in the body and normalizes intestinal function, and also strengthens the immune system. At the same time, stomachs are difficult to digest, so they should not be consumed in the first time after childbirth.

It is recommended to introduce chicken by-products into the menu after three months of a newborn’s life. They cannot be fried - only boiled or stewed with a minimum amount of spices and additives.

Heat processing of poultry with the addition of oil contributes to the formation of carcinogens. These substances are difficult to digest. And fried chicken crust is saturated with fats, which, when ingested by a child, cause colic and indigestion.

Therefore, a nursing mother will have to give up dishes such as chicken kebab, smoked chicken, grilled chicken, etc. while breastfeeding.

So far we have been talking about meat. Now let’s figure out whether it’s possible to consume chicken broth while breastfeeding. It is allowed to be introduced into food after the first two weeks after birth. The broth has many beneficial properties, including:

  • beneficial effect on the digestive system;
  • strengthening the immune system;
  • activation of collagen production;
  • positive effect on the condition of the joints of mother and baby;
  • the content of phosphorus, magnesium and calcium promotes the growth of the child’s bone tissue;
  • a large amount of vitamins and minerals;
  • the content of glycine and proline has an anti-inflammatory and calming effect.

Salo and shish kebab

Shish kebab is a favorite pork dish, traditionally prepared in spring and summer. Should mom refuse it or can she eat a piece?

It is not advisable to consume pork shish kebab while breastfeeding. Fats and carcinogens contained in charcoal-grilled meat will negatively affect a child’s digestion, especially in the first 3 months of his life. Sauces and marinades served with the dish can cause poisoning.

Excess fat and high calorie content provoke constipation and intestinal colic in a child. Marinades made from mayonnaise, onions, and garlic, in which meat is soaked, are contraindicated during breastfeeding.

Overcooked meat will cause abdominal pain in a child, while undercooked meat will cause indigestion or the occurrence of infectious diseases.

If mom chooses the right marinade and cooks the dish well, then sometimes you can allow a couple of pieces of pork. It is best to eat shish kebab with stewed vegetables. Use kefir or mineral water as a marinade, a small amount of salt and herbs is acceptable. During the cooking process, you need to monitor the readiness; it is best to cut the meat into small pieces and bake on a wire rack.

It is better for a woman who is breastfeeding to avoid lard. Excess fat will not benefit the baby or mother. But if mom really wants salted lard, then after 6 months you can eat a small piece. Smoked lard is strictly prohibited.

Usually on store shelves there are already cleaned poultry stomachs, which just need to be rinsed with water before cooking. When purchasing offal from farms, you often have to clean it yourself.
