Physical parameters - weight and height - are largely determined by genetic factors. These indicators can vary significantly even within the same family - siblings may differ from each other in physical development. Every week the baby gains a certain number of grams, and the child’s weight at 2 months must fit into the average of existing standards.

All parents would like to know whether their baby is developing correctly, how far ahead or behind his peers he is in both mental and physical development, how much a child should weigh at 2 months and how tall he should be.

Child development at 2 months of life

After two months, parents themselves can observe certain changes in the baby’s development. First of all, his motor skills improve and his body control improves. Movements made chaotically and randomly begin to gradually disappear. The grasping reflex develops. The child briefly grabs the parent's fingers or tries to hold on to the toy.

At this time, children taste their fingers. They raise their head and hold it for 20 seconds while lying on their stomach.

Curiosity pushes the baby to explore the world around him. He already distinguishes his own from strangers by their faces and voices. Parents make them smile, and when strangers appear, their eyes become wary. The child begins to show interest in moving objects, especially those that can make sounds.

Most babies begin to wail at two months, making a sound similar to singing. Parents should pay attention to this and support these attempts in every possible way.

Weight gain and growth

Over the past month of life (from the 1st to the 2nd), the boy should have gained weight and height by 960–1300 grams and 3.8 cm, the girl by 800–1160 g and 3.5 cm.

From two months, a boy should gain 170-220 grams of weight per week, a girl - 150-190 g. Over the coming month, a boy should gain 700-900 grams in weight and 3 cm in height, a girl - 600-870 g and 2.7 cm.

Weight and height of a child at 2 months

Each child at birth has an individual height and weight. Further changes in these parameters depend on many factors, including characteristics of physiological development and the amount of food consumed. Therefore, it is very difficult to calculate these indicators in advance for two months.

However, there are patterns of normal child development. In accordance with them, the development of a child by two months is quite active. This activity requires constant monitoring of the baby’s weight and growth. At this time, a normally developed boy weighs about 5.2 kg. The girls weigh about 5.0 kg. Their height will be 58 and 57 cm, respectively. These indicators may have deviations in one direction or another, which often worries many parents. However, there is no serious cause for concern. In any case, at a monthly examination, the pediatrician will determine the child’s development process and advise the parents on the further course of action.

Baby nutrition at 2 months

The active development of a baby requires significant energy expenditure. Therefore, two-month-old children have a very good appetite. Approximately 130-150 milliliters of breast milk are consumed per feeding, and the total daily volume is approximately 800 to 900 milliliters.

The standard scheme involves feeding 6 times a day. The intervals between feedings are approximately three hours. The child has become a little older, so the night break can be increased. In some cases, the period of time from one feeding to the next lasts from 24.00 to 06.00 hours.

A growing baby becomes overly curious, and this often distracts him from eating. Therefore, you should feed your baby in a secluded, quiet place, to the quiet tunes of a lullaby.

Due to the increased consumption of breast milk, it begins to be produced in larger quantities. However, sometimes failures occur and milk becomes scarce. New mothers need not worry. To increase lactation, you need to make changes in your diet, increasing the amount of foods with a high protein content. At the same time, further milk production is stimulated through periodic emptying of the mammary glands. Frequent breastfeeding also increases milk production.

Is there a difference in the weight of breastfed babies?

The nature of feeding influences how much a baby will weigh at 2 months. Breastfed children will have a slightly lower body weight compared to peers who receive mixed or artificial nutrition.

There is no need to panic because your baby is gaining weight slower than his peers. Your doctor may advise you to increase the frequency of breastfeeding so that your baby gets more calories.

It is worse if the cause of the baby’s insufficient body weight is a deficiency of breast milk in a nursing mother or its insufficient nutritional value. By putting a baby to the breast, it is impossible to know how much milk he eats at one feeding. For a child over 2 months of age, the recommended amount of breast milk or formula is 120 ml.

If the milk comes in well at each feeding, and the baby behaves calmly and does not look hungry, most likely the problem is that the milk is not sufficiently saturated with nutrients. In this case, it is recommended to review the diet of a nursing mother.

If there is not enough milk, then the baby’s weight at 2 months will be below normal. This is not difficult to find out: if there is a lack of breast milk, the baby does not fall asleep at the end of feeding, cannot withstand two- and three-hour intervals between feedings, shows dissatisfaction in every possible way, and his stool becomes denser and rarer, turning into constipation.

All these signs indicate that the baby does not have enough milk, and the pediatrician’s answer to how much weight a child should gain at 2 months will confirm this.

What to do in this case? First, try to improve the production of breast milk through more frequent breastfeeding, taking natural remedies that stimulate lactation, normalizing the drinking regime (at least 2 liters of clean water per day) and a healthy diet (harmony of proteins, fats and carbohydrates). If this does not help, most likely the baby will have to be supplemented with formula milk, that is, switched to a mixed diet.

Baby's sleep at 2 months

Sleep perfectly restores the strength of a two-month-old baby. Therefore, it is still long, consisting of several daytime dreams and the main night sleep. All daytime dreams are divided into several periods.

  • Early in the morning the child wakes up, eats and remains awake for some time. Falls asleep imperceptibly, as if in continuation of a night's sleep.
  • The next nap comes after the second feeding. The child is already completely awake and after eating is quite ready for various activities and games. Having played enough, he falls asleep again.
  • For the third time, the baby sleeps during a walk in the fresh air. This is the healthiest sleep that promotes hardening. The child must be healthy and dressed for the weather.
  • The fourth sleep can occur after 19.00 and lasts until about 22.00. If by this time the child has not woken up on his own, he needs to be woken up, fed, and bathed. After these activities, the baby is ready to sleep through the night with a break for night feeding.

The final sleep schedule is set according to the body's needs and is tied to other activities carried out during the day.

The baby's height does not worry parents as much as weight, since it is primarily determined by genes. This indicator is less dependent on nutrition or health status. At first, the baby gains up to 3 cm every month, and as the year approaches, the growth rate decreases and amounts to one to two cm per month.

Games with a 2 month old baby

The baby is growing and developing more and more actively. At two months, his organs of vision and hearing become more advanced, motor skills develop, and coordination of movements improves. To make these processes even more effective, you need to regularly conduct educational games and activities with your child.

Bright toys moved in front of the eyes work well. The child follows each such object with his gaze. If the baby is tired, then the lesson should be postponed. The development of vision is facilitated by pictures hung at a normal viewing distance.

To improve grasping reflexes, colored balls of different sizes are used. They take turns being placed in the palm, and the child learns to grab them. For more complex tasks, balls tied to a string are used. The grabbed ball must be pulled on the string to increase the incentive to hold it tighter.

Strengthening muscles is carried out using special exercises. The baby lies on his stomach and reaches for a bright rattle. At the same time, raising his head, he tenses several muscle groups at once.

Classical music and reading nursery rhymes aloud can effectively promote hearing development.

Massage and gymnastics for a 2 month old baby

Gymnastic and massage procedures performed daily have a significant impact on the development of a two-month-old baby. In the absence of a children's massage therapist, all exercises can be done independently.

The mandatory set of exercises includes stroking the arms, legs, tummy and back. For this, light stroking movements are used. There are flexion and extension exercises performed on the spine, legs and toes.

The classes provided strengthen muscle tone and the entire musculoskeletal system. Massage has a calming effect, which makes the child fall asleep very quickly.

Speech development of a 2-year-old child

Speech comprehension: Understands a short story (without showing actions) about familiar events (about what he did on a walk). Answers questions about these events. Performs up to three orders (take, carry, put). “He feels sorry” and “helps” at the request of an adult. Knows (shows) the names of parts of the face (lips, teeth, tongue, forehead, ears, cheeks, etc.) and body (arms, legs, back).

Active speech (up to 200-300 differently pronounced words): Uses sentences of two or three words when communicating with adults and children, when making statements, in requests. The phrases are not formatted. Begins to use adjectives and pronouns, prepositions, adverbs. May refer to himself in the third person. He finishes the quatrains in familiar verses and sings along. In two or three sentences he tells what he sees at the moment. Asking questions. Names the objects in the picture:

  • at the request of an adult,
  • independently (comments).

Lightened words are replaced with correct ones. Gives an assessment of himself: “good”, “big”, “beautiful”. Says: “goodbye”, “bye”, “thank you”, “hello” in individual pronunciation.
