pharmachologic effect
Phosphalugel is an antacid drug that has an adsorbent, acid-neutralizing and enveloping effect. It reduces the activity of pepsin. Aluminum phosphate neutralizes excess hydrochloric acid, while maintaining physiological conditions of digestion, and prevents secondary hypersecretion of gastric juice.
Envelops the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract, thus forming a protective layer on it that protects against aggressive factors and promotes its regeneration.
The drug is safe because it is not capable of causing strong alkalization of gastric juice and does not cause excessive production of hydrochloric acid. And long-term use of Phosphalugel does not cause disturbances in phosphorus metabolism.

Which is better: Maalox or Phosphalugel?
Maalox has a liquid form, which is preferable in the treatment of diseases of the esophagus. At the same time, Maalox promotes the leaching of phosphorus and calcium from bones and blood, so Falmagel is best prescribed to children, pregnant women and the elderly.
Which is better: Almagel and Phosphalugel?
Almagel is a suspension, which is more effective, since liquid preparations are better for esophageal disease. Both medicines have the same properties. Almagel is best taken if a short-term course of treatment is needed to eliminate the symptoms of the disease, while Phosphalugel is intended for a long course as an antacid.
What it helps with: main indications
The drug significantly reduces the acidity of gastric juice, while helping to normalize the previous performance of the gastrointestinal tract.
The therapeutic effect after taking Phosphalugel, as a rule, begins within 10-15 minutes. and lasts for 4-6 hours.

Phosphalugel can be prescribed to children for the following conditions:
- Functional digestive disorders.
- Poisoning in children.
- Gastritis.
Phosphalugel can also be used for other conditions and disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, but only as prescribed by a doctor individually for each patient.
Pancreatic diseases | Used in complex therapy for acute and chronic pancreatitis. This is due to the fact that excess hydrochloric acid negatively affects the pancreas, causing pain. Phosphalugel, restoring the acid balance, will relieve pain from pancreatitis. |
For heartburn | The use of Phosphalugel will help with heartburn of any etiology, because in order to eliminate the burning sensation, it is necessary to reduce the acidity of the juice in the stomach. The instructions for use indicate that Phosphalugel not only reduces acidity for heartburn, but also forms a protective layer that soothes the mucous membrane. |
In case of poisoning and vomiting | In case of alcohol intoxication, poisoning of various etiologies, a sorbent with a slight laxative effect helps to cleanse the body and remove, by adsorbing, toxic substances. For vomiting caused by poisoning, it will help calm the gastrointestinal tract by forming an enveloping layer on the gastrointestinal mucosa, which will help stop the urge to vomit. |
For heartburn | Eating fatty, spicy foods, snacking on the go, deteriorating nutrition and water quality while traveling are the main causes of indigestion and exacerbation of chronic diseases. Nausea, heaviness in the stomach, and diarrhea may occur. This is also an indication for taking phosphalugel. When overeating or drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, symptoms of stomach and intestinal upset occur. Phosphalugel reduces their manifestation and relieves hangovers. |
Instructions for use: dosage and rules of administration
The sorbent should be drunk with caution and strictly according to the instructions so that the drug does not provoke inhibition of gastrointestinal motility. Read the instructions before use to know exactly how to drink Phosphalugel correctly.
Rules of application:
- It is necessary to thoroughly knead the contents of the sachet between your fingers to obtain a homogeneous gel.
- Holding the bag vertically, you need to cut or tear off the corner in the place indicated by the dotted line.
- Squeeze the gel into a glass through the hole in the bag.

How to take Phosphalugel for gastritis
How to drink Phosphalugel correctly for gastritis? Recommendations for admission will be as follows:
- 30 minutes before meals you need to drink 1 sachet with a dosage of 20 grams. Frequency: three times a day.
- 30 minutes before meals, take 1 sachet, dosage of 16 grams. Frequency – 4 times a day.
- The break between two doses of the drug should be at least 2 hours. It is not recommended to use more than two sachets of Phosphalugel at one time. If, during the break between doses of the drug, the patient’s stomach pain resumes, then one more sachet can be taken.
- If attacks of nausea develop, you are allowed to drink 2 sachets at once to alleviate the condition. How many days to take Phosphalugel when treating gastritis? It is necessary to use the drug not only until the symptoms characteristic of the disease, in particular pain, are eliminated, but until the condition is completely stabilized.
The average course of treatment is 4 days - 2 weeks. Phosphalugel is intended exclusively for internal use. But it can be taken either in its pure form or pre-dissolved in drinking water. The use of carbonated liquids is prohibited.
To prepare the drink, just take half a glass of water. First, knead the bag well with your hands to mix its contents. It should become homogeneous. Using scissors, cut off the corner of the bag and squeeze the medicinal gel into a spoon or water.
Since the composition of the drug includes a large amount of aluminum, in case of an overdose the patient may experience a decrease in gastrointestinal motility. To correct the situation, the patient is prescribed laxatives.
It is not recommended to take any medications simultaneously with a dose of Phosphalugel. The formation of a protective film on the surface of the mucous membranes can interfere with the absorption of medicinal components, reducing effectiveness. This is especially true for drugs from the group of cardiac glycosides, drugs containing iron, as well as tetracycline antibiotics.
For the complex treatment of pathologies with high or normal acidity, the drug is prescribed in a dose of 1 sachet 3 times a day, half an hour before meals.
With increased acidity of gastric juice
An increase in the functional activity of glandular cells responsible for the production of hydrochloric acid and pepsin (the enzyme catalyzes the primary breakdown of protein compounds) leads to tissue irritation. The inflammatory process is accompanied by heartburn and pain. This significantly worsens the course of the inflammatory process. The disease often spreads to the duodenum.
To normalize acidity, the drug is prescribed 1 sachet 3-4 times a day, the duration of treatment is 10-14 days.
With low acidity
A decrease in the functional activity of the glands is accompanied by thinning of the walls of the organ (atrophic gastritis). In this case, the drug is not recommended for use for course therapy, except in cases of reverse reflux of duodenal contents, including bile components.
The drug is usually prescribed occasionally to reduce the severity of unpleasant manifestations of the disease, including heaviness in the abdomen, which may include periodic heartburn caused by irritation of the esophageal mucosa by bile components. The required amount of gel is taken half an hour before meals.
Contraindications
Phosphalugel has absolute and relative contraindications for use. If there are absolute contraindications, the drug should not be taken. And if there are relative contraindications, Phosphalugel can be used, but with caution and with careful monitoring of the person’s condition.
Thus, absolute contraindications to the use of Phosphalugel are the presence of the following conditions:

Medicine for children
Children's use of the drug is possible only in small doses and once. How long to take Phosphalugel during therapy is decided by the doctor, depending on the child’s condition.
The biggest concern for parents is what to do if their baby has heartburn. Phosphalugel is safe and can be used from birth. Helps with frequent regurgitation that occurs due to increased acidity of the children's stomach. Phosphalugel helps with diathesis: treatment will take 5-10 days.
The drug has no taste and is easily given to small children. Neither children nor adults need to dilute with water.
