Origin and history of the nut
The walnut came to the territory of Kievan Rus from Greece, hence the name of the tree and the fruit. And in Greece the nut was called Persian, since it was supplied from Persia. There was also a period of time when walnut fruit was brought to Rus' from the southern Romanian region of Wallachia. Then the nut was called Voloshsky.
As ancient archaeological excavations show, the nut was discovered in caves in northern Iraq 8000 BC. And the birthplace of the tree is considered to be Ancient Persia. On its territory, only members of the royal family could eat the tasty fruit. That is why the nut is sometimes also called royal.
The first written evidence of the king nut is Mesopotamian clay tablets dating back to 2000 BC. Mentions of the walnut are also found in Greek mythology: Dionysus turned his deceased lover into a walnut tree.
Walnuts in Ancient Greece were highly valued, revered, considered a sacred product and called “food for the mind.” It received this name for its amazing properties to have a beneficial effect on brain function and all mental activity. Another interesting name coined by the ancient Greeks is “acorns for the gods.” This name spoke of how sacredly and strongly the Greeks believed not only in its beneficial properties for the body, but how much they literally deified it, since the gods themselves taste it!!!
A very interesting fact - “common people” were forbidden to eat it! Its beneficial properties for strengthening the mind are so strong that the consumption of walnuts by ordinary people was punished very cruelly!
Habitat and countries of walnut
The plant's habitat is from the Balkans to China. It grows well and bears fruit in Ukraine, the Caucasus, and Moldova. The walnut tree can reach a height of up to 30 meters. The plant has a spreading, beautiful crown and a powerful trunk, the circumference of which is up to 7 meters. The leaves of the tree are large (up to 70 mm), the flowers are small, greenish. Leaves and flowers bloom at the same time.
At the moment, the largest manufacturers and suppliers to the world market are the USA, China, Ukraine, Turkey, Moldova, Romania, France, etc.
Walnut tree: botanical description of the plant
This tree is up to 25 meters high, from the Walnut family, the species is walnut (other names are Voloshsky walnut, royal walnut, Greek walnut, mahogany). It has a rather thick, powerful trunk, and its branches form a wide, branched, very well-developed large crown.
Photo walnut tree
Walnut is a wind-pollinated plant that blooms in May and begins to bear fruit at the age of 10 years. The trees are rightfully considered to be long-lived; some of them are up to 400 years old. Moreover, even at such a respectable age, the plant still bears fruit.
It tolerates drought well, which cannot be said about frost. For him, frost of 25 degrees is already intolerable, therefore, as a rule, it grows well in warm climates where there is good, moist soil. Cultivated since very ancient times.
The fruits of the walnut tree are rather large single-seeded drupes, round-oval in shape, enclosed in a very hard woody shell, inside which the edible part of the nut is enclosed.
Interesting!
There are several varieties of fruits. They are distinguished by their chemical composition, shape, size, development of partitions, smell, taste, shell hardness and other indicators. The weight of each individual nut can reach 17 g, up to 60% of its weight is in the kernel.
The walnut fruit ripens from August to October. As a rule, very productive trees, even if you do not care for them, can bear fruit generously on their own.
The fruit of the king nut has three clearly distinguishable parts:
- the kernel or seed has 2 cotyledons, used for food;
- the inner shell is called the walnut shell or endocarp; it is strong and consists of two halves tightly connected to each other. The lobes of the nucleoli inside the shell are separated by a membrane; it is thin and inedible;
- the outer shell is called the pericarp, it is a fleshy skin with a specific odor, its function is to protect the core. The unripe shell can also be eaten; it has a sour taste.
Man has learned to extract beneficial properties from every part.
Gardeners say that nothing should be planted near walnuts, since their roots release toxic substances into the soil that adversely affect all plants growing nearby. So, for example, the distance between the tree and the planted tomatoes should be at least 25 meters.
In ancient times, the nut crop was harvested by hand: they shook the branches, used a very long pole to knock down the fruits, and then picked them up from the ground. Currently, the process has been mechanized: some machines shake the plant, others collect them using vacuum pumps.
Physical properties and smell
The tree trunk is bright gray, the leaves and pericarp are rich green, the endocarp is pale brown, the kernels can be either light or dark, it depends on the variety. The taste of the kernel also varies depending on the variety: from bitter-sour to sweet. The walnut fruit is resistant to temperature changes, and the tree is resistant to pests and diseases. As a rule, the fruits of the plant are medium in size. They have a strong, but thin shell and a thick fibrous skin. When ripe, the peel dries out and bursts, so the seed separates by itself, but does not open. The kernel can be removed from the shell quite easily without harming its appearance.
The smell of royal nut leaves is quite pleasant, although specific. In small doses it is beneficial for the human body, but in large doses it can cause headaches and sleep disorders.

Beneficial properties of walnuts for men and women
The benefits of nuts for the body are highly valued for their rich vitamin composition, but in particular, nuts are highly recommended for women’s health and reproduction, and honey with nuts is very popular among aphrodisiacs and a remedy for male strength, which is even prescribed by doctors to stimulate male hormones.
Its beneficial properties for women are difficult to put into words. Nuts are especially useful for pregnant women. Doctors strongly recommend including this product in the diet of expectant mothers, albeit in small quantities. After all, do not forget that this is still a very high-calorie product.
During pregnancy, walnuts will saturate the body with fatty acids and even help in the formation of the fetal brain. After childbirth, women are usually puzzled by the restoration of their figure. Therefore, they are concerned with the question “how many walnuts can you eat per day without compromising your slimness?” For these purposes, you should consume no more than 60 grams of the product per day. It happens that after giving birth a woman feels a lack of milk.
Royal nut is ready to help with breastfeeding. The lactation period is a rather specific time; the quality and quantity of milk is influenced by a number of external and internal factors. Eating a nut kernel will improve the composition and fat content of milk, saturate the baby with nutrients, and also help improve the immunity of mother and child.
On a note!
Do not forget that the product is a strong allergen, so it should be introduced into the diet (especially during breastfeeding) with extreme caution. On the first day, you can start with half a kernel, and then increase the dose. But in any case, the daily norm should not exceed three cores.
The benefits of walnuts for men are also obvious. They knew about this back in ancient times and included the royal acorn in the diet of young men. It contributed to the harmonious formation and development of the male body. The zinc contained in the product normalizes the function of the sex glands, prostate function and testosterone levels.
Regular consumption of nut products will improve sexual life, increase potency, regulate the level of hormones in the blood, and normalize the functioning of the thyroid gland. It is especially popular among men to use a mixture of honey with walnuts - a kind of doping for male potency. The obvious question for men is: “How many walnuts can you eat a day?” To maintain vitality and excellent health, it is better for a man to eat up to 10 nuts a day.
The benefits of walnuts for children
Daily consumption of walnuts is recommended for children, since the product promotes full development and growth, equalizes behavior in society and mood. This is especially true during periods of mental work. Statistics show that children whose diet contains walnut delicacies have a higher concentration of attention and better memory compared to those children who do not regularly eat walnuts.
Photo: walnut benefits and harm for children
Pediatricians recommend starting to give children nuts from the age of three, but not earlier. Why? Because it is still a fatty, heavy product for the stomach, which is difficult for them to digest. The child’s digestive system may simply not be able to cope with it, causing diarrhea, bloating and other unpleasant consequences.
Important!
Children who are prone to excess weight should not overuse such a high-calorie delicacy. It should also be given to people with allergies with caution. How much per day? It’s better to start with one nut and see how the child’s body reacts. Then you can increase the dosage to 30-40 grams, which the child will receive several times a week.
Growing
There are about 40 types of walnuts, which differ in:
- tree crown diameter;
- level of frost resistance;
- nutritional value and beneficial properties of fruits.
The thickness of the tree crown reaches 21 m in diameter, the height of the tree is 25 m. The plant is a real long-liver: in favorable climatic conditions, the nut will bear fruit for 600 years, and the wild species will bear fruit for up to 1200 years. From 2 to 320 kg of fruits are collected from one tree.
The “Encyclopedic Dictionary” of Brockhaus and Efron says that in the 19th century. in the Caucasus there were trees that yielded about 1630 kg (100 poods) of nuts each.
The plant begins to bear fruit only 10 years after planting.

- on the second, they take the remaining cake and press it again, but this time hot. In this way, up to 15% of nut oil is extracted. It turns out to be dark yellow in color, inferior to cold-pressed oil in taste, but it also contains beneficial properties. Composition and calorie content
The benefits of walnuts for the human body are explained by their rich composition. They are full of vitamins and minerals, omega-3 fatty acids. Few people know, but walnuts contain 50 times more vitamin C than citrus fruits. It is recommended to be used as a snack, as it satisfies perfectly. There are more than 650 calories in 100 grams, but if you consume them in moderation, the calories will be absorbed evenly and this will not affect excess weight in any way.
This is interesting! It is known that in ancient Babylon ordinary people were forbidden to eat walnuts. It was believed that anyone who ate even a grain would acquire incredible mental abilities and all the prerequisites to become a ruler. Therefore, anyone who disobeyed the order faced the death penalty.
Some argue that unripe nuts are more beneficial. But this statement is not entirely true. Yes, young nuts are healthy, they contain a lot of vitamin C, B1, B2, carotene, etc. But as they ripen, their composition becomes richer. Vitamins of the PP group, tannins, fatty oils, fiber, iron and cobalt salts appear.
How to choose
It is known that it is worth purchasing unpeeled nuts, since the kernels are eaten fresh. Without heat treatment, there is a high possibility of infection with viral infections, worms and other diseases transmitted by household means, because the possibility of contact of such fruits with the environment cannot be ruled out.
For storage, you should also opt for unshelled walnuts - this will allow you to get the maximum benefit. What you should pay attention to when buying unpeeled ones:
- shell – light;
- there are no traces of mold or rot;
- no unpleasant odor;
- unbroken shells of nuclei;
- heavy in weight;
- no ringing when shaking.
When purchasing cores:
- shade – light;
- skin – smooth;
- elastic, dense to the touch;
- no pungent odor;
- no oil on the surface;
- not wrinkled.
Over time, the vitamin and mineral substances that walnuts are rich in are susceptible to destruction and their benefits disappear, so you should not eat fruits that are not fresh.
