Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Espumisan baby is a drug to reduce the amount of gases in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Its mechanism of action is based on the ability of simethicone to reduce surface tension at the interface between liquid and gaseous media. The surfactant properties of simethicone promote the fusion of gas bubbles and cause the destruction of foam in the intestines. The released gas is absorbed or, under the influence of intestinal peristalsis, is excreted naturally. The use of the drug during preparation for examinations of the abdominal organs allows one to obtain accurate diagnostic data and avoid image defects caused by gas bubbles.

Pharmacokinetics

After oral administration, simethicone is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The chemical inertness of the active substance allows it to act only in the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract. The drug does not affect the digestive processes because it does not interact with bacteria and enzymes.

It is excreted unchanged through the intestines.

Is it possible to take Espumisan during pregnancy?

The instructions for the medicine say that there are no clinical data on the use of Espumisan during pregnancy. But due to the mechanism of action of simethicone and the low percentage of absorption of this substance in the gastrointestinal tract, pharmacologists do not expect any negative effects after using the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, does this mean that the drug is completely safe for the unborn child and his mother?

Not at all necessary. The composition alone is worth it: simethicone, white gelatin, glycerol, methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, E104 quinoline yellow dye, S yellow-orange dye. Your doctor will probably convince you that all these substances are harmless. Only a pregnant woman is not happy with the presence of, for example, dyes. In addition, the same instructions warn that orange-yellow dye S (E110) can cause allergic reactions, methylparaben (E218) can cause hypersensitivity reactions, including delayed ones, and in some cases skin rashes and itching may occur .

Of course, intolerance can be observed to any substance taken orally, even to more familiar foods. However, do not forget that during pregnancy the risks of developing allergic reactions increase significantly.

So, in view of the above, maybe it’s worth trying more natural remedies to combat flatulence? For example, tea made from dill or fennel seeds, or with cardamom. You should reconsider your diet and, possibly, exclude from it foods that cause fermentation processes in the intestines and increased formation of gases. These include, in particular, cabbage, legumes, grapes, sweets and fresh baked goods, and carbonated drinks.

However, many pregnant women are saved by Espumisan and do not observe any negative consequences from taking it. Moreover, the medicine is not absorbed into the blood and therefore does not have any effect on the fetus, doctors assure. There are no contraindications for the use of Espumisan during pregnancy and breastfeeding! The CI is even greater: for coma of intestinal obstruction and individual intolerance, there are no longer any contraindications in the instructions. It is interesting that among the possible side effects, only allergic reactions are reported in some cases.

So maybe it's worth a try? Of course, it’s up to you to decide in any case.

Indications for use

  • symptoms of intestinal colic in infants;
  • flatulence, increased gas formation in the period after surgery, as well as other symptoms of excessive formation and accumulation of gases in the gastrointestinal tract;
  • symptoms of excessive gas formation against the background of functional dyspepsia;
  • preparation for examination of the abdominal and pelvic organs using ultrasound, radiography, esophagogastroduodenoscopy and other diagnostic tools, including in the form of an additive to contrast agents to obtain images using the double contrast method;
  • acute poisoning with detergents that contain tensides (foaming agents).

Can pregnant women take Espumisan?

Changing hormonal levels (increased progesterone) and changes in a woman’s body during pregnancy lead to intestinal disorders, constipation and gas formation.

The appearance of flatulence is influenced by changes in the enzyme apparatus of the pancreas and poor digestion of food.

Can I take Espumisan during pregnancy?

The growing uterus also puts pressure on the intestines, which can cause increased flatulence, especially in the 2nd and 3rd trimester.

Poor nutrition for women: excessive consumption of carbohydrates in foods (baked goods, sweets, grapes, sweet carbonated drinks), as well as legumes, some vegetables (cabbage, beets) can cause fermentation in the body.

Espumisan taken during pregnancy is a safe drug that:

  • is able to relieve a woman from discomfort and unpleasant sensations in the abdomen, psychological worries due to flatulence;
  • not subject to absorption in the intestine;
  • safe at any stage of gestation, has minor contraindications, goes away without side effects;
  • does not contain sugars (suitable for pregnant women with diabetes);
  • recommended for certain dysfunctions of the digestive system.

Espumisan is well tolerated and does not have a negative effect on the fetus. It contains the substance simethicone, which converts intestinal gases into another physical form, removing bloating and pain associated with it. Simethicone does not cause allergies and is absolutely harmless; it is successful both in treating pregnant women and children from the first days of their life.

The excipients included in the medicine require testing for an allergic component if a woman has a tendency to them. The product is available in pharmacies without a prescription, but it is better to discuss its use with your obstetrician to exclude intolerance to the components.

To obtain a double contrast image, add 2–4 ml drops per 1000 ml of contrast suspension.

Before the actual esophagogastroduodenoscopy, the patient is allowed to take 2-3 ml of the drug orally. If it is necessary to eliminate gas bubbles that interfere with endoscopy, 2–3 ml of emulsion can be injected through the endoscope channel.

For the treatment of acute poisoning with detergents containing detergents, the use of 1–4 ml drops is indicated, depending on the severity of intoxication.

Espumisan is a local carminative drug produced by a German pharmaceutical company, which is widely used in domestic medical practice. This medicine belongs to the over-the-counter category. Espumisan is presented on pharmacy shelves in the form of four dosage forms:

  • gelatin-coated oral capsules;

Espumisan

Espumisan is an over-the-counter drug

The main active ingredient of Espumisan is simethicone, which determines its effectiveness and safety. This active component, entering the gastrointestinal tract, begins to disrupt the connection between liquid and gaseous consistencies. As a result, the mechanism of foam destruction and release of gases is triggered, so the latter have the opportunity to escape naturally.

Espumisan is not classified in any drug category by the FDA.

special instructions

If colic and/or excessive gas formation persists in infants after prolonged use of Espumisan Baby, you should consult a doctor. A medical examination may be required to diagnose the cause of the child's illness.

For children with hereditary fructose intolerance, the use of Espumisan baby drops is contraindicated, since the drug contains liquid sorbitol (sorbitol).

Patients with diabetes mellitus should take into account the content of 0.199 g of sorbitol in 1 ml (25 drops) of emulsion, which is equivalent to 0.017 XE (bread unit).

Impact on the ability to drive vehicles and complex mechanisms

According to the instructions, Espumisan baby does not affect the patient’s ability to drive various vehicles and mechanisms.

Reviews of Espumisan baby

Reviews about Espumisan baby are mixed. Some parents, confirming the effectiveness of the drug, write that the drops saved them from sleepless nights. They gave the drug to the child before he started crying from abdominal cramps, in the evening before bed. For babies with more frequent pain, bloating and intestinal colic, it is recommended to use the drug several times during the day. The therapeutic effect of the drops largely depends on the diet of the nursing mother and the individual characteristics of the child.

Other parents note with regret the complete absence or short duration of action of Espumisan baby for newborns and small children. However, everyone points to the pleasant taste of the drops and the convenient dispensing device for use.

Contraindications and side effects according to instructions

Espumisan has a minimal list of contraindications, including:

  • hypersensitivity;
  • intestinal obstruction.

There are no diseases or other restrictions on this list. Manufacturers do not indicate anything terrible about adverse reactions, except perhaps an individual allergic reaction to the components of the medication.

Cases of intolerance to Espumisan are recorded extremely rarely, but they do exist, so read the ingredients carefully.

If you have previously experienced attacks of allergy to any similar substance, then it is better to play it safe and use natural methods of treating and preventing flatulence.

Proper nutrition helps get rid of flatulence. Eliminate gas-forming foods from your diet, including cabbage, carbonated drinks, grapes, apples, all kinds of sweets and pastries, as well as bread and legumes.

How to get rid of bloating - video

Causes

Bloating due to excess gas is common. This is not a symptom of the disease, but only a physiological phenomenon associated with changes in the body. Reasons that stimulate flatulence:

  • In the earliest stages, progesterone begins to be actively produced in a woman’s body. This is a hormone that helps maintain pregnancy. Its main function is to relax the smooth muscles of the uterus to prevent miscarriage. But the same hormone also acts on the intestines, reducing the intensity of peristalsis, which promotes the accumulation of gases;
  • in the second and third trimester, flatulence occurs due to compression of organs by the uterus, which increases in size.

Of course, increased gas formation is not a fatal phenomenon, but extremely unpleasant. Therefore, it is possible and necessary to fight it.

In what situations can Espumisan be given to infants?

Espumisan baby can be given to a newborn in conditions such as:

  • flatulence, flotation, swallowing large amounts of air during feeding;
  • infant colic caused by various reasons in newborns and infants;
  • prevention of colic due to improper feeding;
  • functional disorders of the gastrointestinal tract without organic pathology, accompanied by excessive formation of bubbles;
  • preparing the digestive system for x-ray and endoscopic examination;
  • poisoning from household products that form foam.
