The presented plant has a unique chemical composition, which includes a number of rare and difficult to replace substances. In particular, plantain leaves contain a large amount of citric acid, as well as vitamins A, C, and K. In addition, the plant contains phytoncides, tannins, and enzymes.

Plantain can be used to prepare various types of medicines. One of them is cough syrup. Also, a medicinal plant is often used to make infusions, decoctions, and compresses. In some cases, plantain can be consumed fresh, for example in salads or drinks.

Plantain medicine is especially effective for coughs caused by bronchitis, whooping cough, tuberculosis or asthma. Such drugs have a pronounced expectorant effect, as well as a calming effect, which helps reduce the intensity and frequency of the cough reflex.

Because of its antibacterial properties, plantain leaves are often used topically. Compresses and lotions using this plant significantly speed up the healing process of wounds, cuts, abscesses, and other skin lesions.

Liquid infusion of plantain is often used for bladder problems. This is due to a pronounced diuretic effect. In addition, plantain is often used as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug.

Without a doubt, plantain is a very useful plant with many medicinal properties.

Plantain

Various medicinal plants, such as plantain, should be used with the same caution during pregnancy as traditional pills. One could even say that their uncontrolled use can be more dangerous than taking traditional medications. After all, every tablet, every powder, before reaching the pharmacy, undergoes multi-stage testing. Interestingly, according to statistics, out of 100 drugs that pharmaceutical companies begin to develop, only 1-2 reach the stage of registration and sale in pharmacies! The overwhelming majority of medicinal plants cannot boast of this level of study. If an ordinary tablet contains one, sometimes two substances, then any plant contains dozens of these substances! And how these substances will affect the human body, and especially a pregnant woman, often no one can say. However, some plants have been well studied and there is a certain amount of accumulated information about them.

Plantain syrup during pregnancy

Women who decide to take plantain syrup during pregnancy need to know the main thing - studies of the effect of this plant on the body of a pregnant woman and on the fetus have not been conducted. Therefore, the use of plantain for coughs during pregnancy is not recommended by experts. Although the drug has established itself as a good, mild antitussive, especially for dry, painful coughs. It is better to consult a doctor, especially since a cough is just a symptom, and it is not the symptoms that should be treated, but the disease. And who, if not a doctor, can prescribe you the correct, effective treatment, which will also carry minimal risk (just be sure to tell the doctor about your pregnancy!) Quite good indicators of effectiveness in the fight against gastritis with low acidity, stool disorders, and stomach ulcers and duodenum and in such a remedy as plantain decoction. During pregnancy, sad as it may be, such treatment is also contraindicated. Again, I recommend seeing a doctor.

But maybe plantain seeds are allowed during pregnancy? After all, they bind cholesterol and remove it from the body, and also help remove bile acids and reduce sugar levels. My answer is this: is it worth interfering with the natural processes of the body by taking a little-studied drug? Cholesterol should be fought with proper nutrition, only those people who suffer from diabetes need to reduce sugar, and bile acids are an important substance involved in the digestion process (by the way, psyllium seeds help with impotence, but this does not apply to you, dear readers) . I believe that you should not conduct experiments on yourself in order to find out whether you can take plantain during pregnancy. The correct approach to the treatment of diseases is not to interview friends, acquaintances and relatives, but to contact a specialist. Please note that making a correct diagnosis is 50% of the success of treatment, and it is very doubtful that a pharmacist from a pharmacy will accurately determine your disease. They are not taught this at all in medical school! Therefore, do not look for easy (and most often wrong) ways, go to the doctor. It is he who will correctly diagnose, take into account all your concomitant diseases and correctly carry out the course of treatment.

Modern medicine approaches the treatment of cough in a pregnant woman very selectively. Any substance, be it synthetic or natural, poses a possible threat to the fetus, so all drugs are prescribed to the expectant mother with great caution. In this article we will look at the benefits and harms of plantain syrup during pregnancy, and also find out what diseases it is used to treat.

Other cough syrups for pregnant women

In addition to psyllium-based medications, other types of medications can be used by pregnant women. Medicines with similar effects should also be used only with the permission of the attending physician to minimize the risk of negative effects on the fetus.

Prescribed for the treatment of bronchi and upper respiratory tract in diseases accompanied by difficult sputum separation. Approved for use by pregnant women, but only as prescribed by a specialist. Duration of treatment ranges from 1 week to 10-12 days.

In addition to plantain syrup, medications based on other medicinal plants can be used during pregnancy, which are also effective and can eliminate the unpleasant symptoms of the disease in a short period of time.

Plantain syrup is a common cough medicine, which, due to its composition, is often prescribed to pregnant women. This medication should be taken with extreme caution so as not to harm the unborn child.

Plantain in medicine: a brief dossier

It is not for nothing that this modest herbaceous plant is nicknamed plantain - it is most often found on roadsides, forest paths and clearings, and in personal plots. Ripe inflorescences scatter around themselves a large number of small seeds, which spread, clinging to our clothes, shoes, and also to animal fur. The entire territory of Europe can be safely called the growing area of plantain.

When the plantain became the object of close attention of scientists, it turned out that the lush rosettes with large succulent leaves conceal a whole range of substances beneficial to human health. The varieties of plantain major and lanceolate aroused the greatest interest among scientific luminaries. The tissues of these plants are impregnated with special mucus, which has therapeutic properties. The culture is represented by small bushes with broad, fleshy, oval-shaped leaves and candle-shaped inflorescences.

Today it has been scientifically proven that plantain is a whole laboratory of natural ingredients that form the basis of many medicines. The natural composition of the plant is presented:

  • ascorbic acid;
  • vitamin K;
  • vitamin A;
  • various enzymes and acids;
  • phytoncides;
  • saponins.

The amazing combination of natural substances in plantain leaves improves well-being during colds and infectious diseases, stabilizes the digestive tract and stops bleeding.

Properties of plantain

As a plant, plantain is unremarkable and unpretentious; to exist, it only needs moist soil and a little sun. You can meet it almost everywhere: in the yard of your house, in a clearing or lawn, along a highway, sometimes even among sandy and arid soils. Surely, you will easily recognize it and distinguish it from other plants. Quite large green basal leaves and peculiar flowers that are collected in a long vertical spike.

Absolutely all parts of the plantain are used in medicine, because it is literally all riddled with useful substances. If the seeds are infused, they release mucus, which contains proteins, many enzymes, resins and oils. Currently, plantain is used to treat many diseases - from a common cough or intestinal disorder to infertility.

Traditional medicine uses all parts of the plant: roots, stems, leaves and even seeds, since each of them contains many useful and very important substances for our body.

Thus, the following was found in plantain leaves:

  • polysaccharides with anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects;
  • tannins and phytoncides that provide a bactericidal effect;
  • vitamins and organic acids (chlorogenic, ferulic, fumaric, etc.), which improve metabolic processes.

The stems of the plant contain:

  • flavonoids involved in redox processes;
  • phenolcarboxylic acids that strengthen the immune system.

Found in the roots:

  • phytosterol, a hormone-like substance that helps restore hormonal balance;
  • linoleic acid, necessary for the normal functioning of the body.

And the seeds of the plant include many mineral salts and plant proteins.

Thanks to the interaction of all these substances, herbal preparations from plantain have anti-inflammatory, bactericidal, wound-healing, antiallergic, and immune-stimulating properties.

Individual intolerance to plantain, an allergic reaction to this medicine is also a contraindication, and therefore people with similar reactions, asthmatics, should select medications for treatment with extreme caution. Review of drugs with plantain syrup during pregnancy

The modern pharmaceutical market offers consumers various cough preparations based on plantain. Some of them are allowed to be taken by pregnant women - if you follow the treatment regimen prescribed by your doctor, there is no negative effect on the fetus, and the cough is eliminated. Let's take a look at the plantain syrup preparations that are currently on everyone's lips.

Herbion, plantain syrup during pregnancy

The composition of the drug is a combination of aqueous extracts of plantain leaves and mallow flowers, as well as vitamin C and orange oil. The drug has proven itself as a medicine that relieves dry hacking cough. The softening components of Gerbion envelop the inflamed mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract, reducing discomfort and protecting against irritants that provoke a coughing attack. The medicine has a moderate anti-inflammatory effect.

The instructions for use of Gerbion plantain syrup indicate that treatment with this drug is not advisable during pregnancy. This is due to insufficient information about the effect that the medicine has on the process of bearing a child. Nevertheless, the drug has the right to be in the expectant mother’s medicine cabinet - the doctor prescribes it if the potential benefit of treatment outweighs the likely risk.

The syrup should be drunk after meals. The standard dosage regimen is as follows: 10 ml 3 to 5 times a day. It is recommended to take a portion of the medicine with warm tea or compote. Patients feel significant relief within 2 days after starting to use the syrup. If, during treatment, suspicious symptoms occur in the form of a skin rash or redness, itching or vomiting, stop using Gerbion until the cause of this body reaction is determined.

Eucabal syrup with plantain during pregnancy

The product consists mainly of natural ingredients, but during pregnancy they are treated with great caution and with the permission of the attending physician, since the drug contains ethyl alcohol. True, reviews from expectant mothers about Eucabalus are mostly positive. The combination of active substances (plantain extract and thyme extract) provides patients with positive dynamics of recovery: by relaxing and moisturizing the mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract, a convulsive cough with difficult to separate sputum goes away in a short time.

Eucabal is prescribed exclusively as part of complex therapy for diseases that are accompanied by severe spasmodic cough, bronchitis, tracheitis and tracheobronchitis. The remedy with plantain, like similar cough syrups, is recommended to be taken after meals. The dosage is as follows: 1 - 2 tbsp. l. 3 - 5 times during the day. Treatment lasts 10-14 days if the disease is mild. If there are complications, the doctor determines the duration of therapy privately.

If during treatment with Eucabal the expectant mother does not feel relief, she should stop taking the syrup and seek clarification of the situation from her doctor. The same should be done if side effects occur as a result of using the product. Usually in such cases an allergic skin reaction is observed. Please note that during treatment, Eucabal syrup should be clear and free of impurities. If the solution becomes cloudy and a precipitate appears, the product cannot be used.

Dr. Theiss, plantain syrup during pregnancy

One of the most famous at present is the Mucoplant series, which combines mucolytics produced by German Dr. Theiss. Doctor Theiss developed syrup with plantain, lollipops with honey, anise oil, Bronchosept drops and ointment with eucalyptus oil specifically for the treatment of colds and coughs. The natural remedy Mucoplant syrup with plantain can be taken from the 14th week of pregnancy exclusively for productive cough.

The pronounced therapeutic effect of the drug is due to the presence of plantain and mint extracts in the composition. Doctor Theiss syrup has an anti-inflammatory effect and thereby suppresses the course of the infectious process that attacks the respiratory tract. The drug copes with its intended purpose “excellently” - the active components of the syrup dilute viscous sputum and stimulate its painless expectoration. Syrup with plantain Dr. Theiss helps expectant mothers whose health has been undermined by pharyngitis, tracheitis and bronchitis, as well as any disease whose symptoms include a wet cough.

Note! At the pharmacy, pharmacists offer two types of syrup with plantain Doctor Theiss: one with sugar, the other without. The non-sweet product is designed specifically for people suffering from diabetes and allergies. Otherwise, both types of the drug are completely identical.

Plantain syrup Doctor Theiss take 1 tbsp. l. every 3 hours with a small amount of water. It is recommended to continue treatment for up to 10 days. Expectant mothers tolerate the medicine well. In rare cases, an allergy to plantain or mint occurs, which is obviously due to the individual high sensitivity of the patient.

Plantain and coltsfoot syrup during pregnancy

The product is made on the basis of plantain extract, coltsfoot, mint and eucalyptus oils. The herbal preparation has a powerful anti-inflammatory and expectorant effect. Plantain and coltsfoot syrup are prescribed to pregnant women with great caution, under the responsibility of the doctor.

The drug is highly effective against respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, tracheobronchitis, tracheitis, and pneumonia. The course of treatment lasts approximately 2 - 3 weeks, but the doctor can adjust its duration at his discretion. Syrup with plantain and coltsfoot during pregnancy, take 1 tbsp. l. 3 to 4 times a day. Side effects included symptoms of allergies, contact dermatitis, heartburn and nausea.

Plantain-based syrups

There are various cough medications for pregnant women. Most of them contain plantain, which is associated with its expectorant effect. Many other plants also have a positive effect in treating cough, but they are strictly forbidden to be taken by pregnant women due to their negative effect on the fetus. In turn, plantain syrup during pregnancy, if the dosage regimen is followed, does not affect the unborn child and does not harm the mother’s body.

Common remedies with plantain:

Cough syrup

  • Gerbion. In addition to plantain, the medicine contains orange oil, mallow extract, as well as sucrose and an antibacterial food additive. During pregnancy, it is allowed to take only after the prior approval of a doctor. As a rule, the positive effect of the medicine is felt within 1-2 days after starting treatment.
  • VIF. A distinctive feature of this syrup is that it is made from a different variety of plantain, which has a more pronounced effect on diseases that cause cough. During pregnancy it can be used only in the most extreme cases. This is due to the fact that the drug is alcohol-based and therefore contraindicated for pregnant women.
  • Dr. Theis. It is the most optimal option for treating cough in pregnant women. The syrup contains exclusively safe components. The medicine can also be taken during breastfeeding without any risk to the baby. Treatment should be carried out until the cough disappears completely, but not more than 7-10 days.
  • Plantain and coltsfoot syrup. The drug is made on the basis of extracts of these plants and is very effective against infectious diseases, including those of the respiratory system. The composition also contains ascorbic acid, which has a positive effect on the immune properties of the body. The drug is allowed to be taken during pregnancy, as well as for children over 1 year of age.

Overall, there are several options for psyllium-based medications that can be used to treat coughs.

It should be noted that the effect of plantain syrup is aimed not only at improving the process of sputum separation. The syrup should be taken using a measuring spoon that comes with the medicine or using a regular tablespoon. The medicine should be taken no more than 4 times a day, preferably at equal time intervals. The duration of administration, depending on the composition of the medicine, is from 7-8 to 10-14 days.

The effect of the drug as a whole does not depend on food intake. However, many experts recommend drinking syrup after meals, so that the patient does not eat anything for the next hour.
